It’s time to come clean about the most basic beauty ritual.
Washing your face is so easy you can do it with your eyes closed, right? Turns out you might want to hold the suds until you check out these common missteps that can keep your skin from looking its best and even make you look older than your years.

1You think makeup removal and cleansing are the same things.

Many cleansers aren’t up to the job of taking off makeup completely, so you have to remove it before cleansing, says Debra Jaliman, MD, a dermatologist in NYC and author of Skin Rules.

She recommends wiping off mascara and eye makeup with an eye makeup remover, then moistening a cotton pad with toner or a tiny bit of water and a dab of cleanser and using it to remove the rest of your makeup.

Pay extra attention to areas where it tends to collect—such as above and in the eyebrows and in the creases around the nose and mouth. Once makeup is off, proceed to cleansing.
